Important FLU VACCINE news for 2016-2017 flu season:

As always, Twelve Corners Pediatrics wants to make sure your child has the most effective and safe vaccines available to us.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the CDC has made an announcement that it is no longer recommending the live, NASAL flu vaccine (Flumist® or LAIV) for the upcoming year 2016-2017 flu season. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also endorsed this decision.

As a result of this recommendation, our practice will not be offering this vaccine (nasal) as a choice for our patients this year.

What happened? What changed? Well, the most important thing to note is that the ACIP is always reviewing vaccines for safety and effectiveness. A review of the data from the last 3 flu seasons has shown the live nasal vaccine has become significantly less effective than the injection (shot). This is a big change from the initial results we saw with this vaccine.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We believe that it is very important for your children to be immunized against influenza. We will continue to follow the most reliable scientific evidence on ALL vaccines and evaluate every recommendation for every vaccine, to provide your children with the most effective and safest products available.

For more information on the ACIP recommendations, feel free to read the following articles:

So far 2015 has been a busy year at Twelve Corners Pediatrics!

Our beloved nurse manager, Diane O'Neil retired after 35 years of service.  She will be missed but we can bet she is living it up in her retirement!  A wonderful celebration of Diane's dedication to Twelve Corners Pediatrics and their patients was hosted at the home of the Frelinger's!

2014 saw Twelve Corners start using an electronic medical record.  2015 is the year Twelve Corners Pediatrics embarked on the journey to become a certified Patient Centered Medical Home.  This is a care model focused on whole-person team based care to improve patient outcomes and patient experience.  As part of this initiative our office is now working with two pediatric case managers, Tessa Anderson, RN, BSN and Robin McElligot, LCSW.  We are excited about ways this will help improve overall experience and care from a patient and provider perspective.  Stay tuned for the new and improved Twelve Corners Pediatrics!

Urgent Care and After Hours

We have been noticing a concerning trend lately - more families are utilizing the "urgent care" or "after hours" clinics.  We do not feel that these clinics provide pediatric-oriented care.  For example, often their dosages or choice of medication are not the current standard of care.  Also, this fragmentation of medical care can lead to confusion and misdiagnosis.  We would like to remind everyone that we are available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.  We have Saturday morning hours, walk-in hours every weekday morning, same-day appointments everyday, and the on-call physician sees patients on Sundays and holidays.    We know your children and they know know us.  Please call us first!
